Description
Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) is a parasitic mite that targets honeybees. It feeds on the fat on their bodies and haemolymph (the bee equivalent of blood), weakening their immune systems and making them more vulnerable to diseases and viruses. This pest invades hives, reproduces in brood cells, and severely impacts colonies. It is considered one of the major threats to beekeeping, causing significant losses of bees worldwide.
The objective of varroa treatments is not only to control the infestation and avoid the consequences to the colony; but also to limit the pressure and sanitary impact of the parasite on neighbouring apiaries and on the bee population in general.
Apivar by Veto Pharma is an amitraz-based miticide for honey bees which paralyzes the varroa mite causing it to fall off the bees.
One single application of Apivar has efficacy of up to 99% and there are no temperature constraints as there are with most other varroa treatments.
It can therefore be used at any time of year, although supers must not be on the hives. The strips should be left in for between 6 and 10 weeks, depending on the size of the brood and the time of year.
We would recommend a spring treatment of between 6 and 10 weeks or an autumn treatment of 10 weeks
Apivar comes in a pack of 10 strips. Each treatment requires the use of 2 strips meaning that each pack will treat five hives.
Strips are 210mm long by 40mm wide and therefore fit neatly between the frames without having to be cut or bent
All colonies in the same apiary must be treated at the same time, and neighbouring apiaries should also be treated.
Each 15g strip contains:
- Active substance: Amitraz – 500mg
- Excipient: Ethylene vinyl acetate – qs 15g
Part No. BE-APIVAR
